Sublimation blanks — those white or light-colored polyester items typically used with dye sublimation printing — are everywhere. Mugs, tumblers, t-shirts, tote bags, pillows, and more. But what if you want to use DTF transfers on those same polyester blanks? Can you do it? And if so, how do you get the best results?
The short answer is yes — DTF transfers work beautifully on 100% polyester sublimation blanks. In fact, many decorators prefer DTF for polyester items because it solves some of the key challenges that come with sublimation printing.
Why Choose DTF Over Sublimation for Polyester Items?
Sublimation printing on polyester requires a dedicated sublimation printer, sublimation ink, and special heat-activated paper — along with a heat press. The process produces vivid prints on white and very light-colored polyester, but it has significant limitations: it only works on polyester-rich fabrics, designs will appear washed out on anything less than about 75% polyester content, and sublimation absolutely does not work on dark fabrics.
DTF transfers, on the other hand, work on any color polyester, any color fabric, and don't require special printers or inks on the decorator's end. You simply order your transfers pre-printed from Southeast Prints, then press them onto your polyester blanks just like you would a cotton garment. The result is a vibrant, full-color design that works on dark or light polyester with equal quality.
Pressing DTF Transfers onto Polyester Sublimation Blanks
The process for applying DTF to polyester is the same as for other fabrics, with a few important adjustments. Polyester is more heat-sensitive than cotton, which means there is a higher risk of scorching or dye migration at high temperatures.
Here are the recommended settings for pressing DTF on polyester: use medium-light pressure (slightly less than you'd use for cotton), keep the temperature at 270 to 280°F (slightly lower end of the standard range), press for 10 seconds, and complete a second press through Teflon or butcher paper for 6 seconds. The second press is especially important on polyester as it helps the adhesive fully bond without requiring excessive heat on the first press.
Preventing Dye Migration on Polyester
Dye migration is the single biggest challenge when pressing DTF on polyester — especially on brightly dyed polyester fabrics. This is when the dye from the polyester fabric bleeds into the white underbase of the DTF print, causing discoloration. A red polyester shirt, for example, can cause a DTF print's white areas to appear pink or orange after pressing.
To minimize dye migration, use a lower pressing temperature (270°F rather than 285°F), press for the minimum time needed for good adhesion, avoid a long second press, and always use parchment paper or a Teflon sheet to buffer the heat. On very brightly dyed polyester, consider using a DTF print with a thicker white underbase for added protection. If dye migration remains an issue, DTF on natural fiber fabrics like cotton may produce more predictable results for those specific designs.
Pre-Made Sublimation Blanks vs. Standard Polyester Garments
Pre-made sublimation blanks are typically made from 100% polyester and have a smooth, tightly woven surface. This smooth surface is actually ideal for DTF adhesion — the flat texture allows the adhesive to bond evenly across the entire design area. Many decorators report that DTF transfers on sublimation polyester tees and bags look extremely professional and rival the quality of direct sublimation prints.
Opening Up New Product Possibilities
Using DTF on polyester sublimation blanks opens up a huge product range. You can add custom logos, names, and artwork to sublimation tote bags without needing a sublimation printer. You can create multi-color designs on polyester athletic jerseys, sports bags, and performance wear. And you can print on dark polyester items like black sublimation phone cases or dark athletic shirts — something sublimation simply cannot do.
